I too was surprised by the (gruesome) turn this book took, but I enjoyed it. The ending felt rushed, but I assumed it was part of a series (isn't everything these days?).

I'm a huge fan of Marr, though I'm a couple behind, couldn't get into Radiant Shadows for some reason. This sounds pretty good, and I've noticed that sometimes her lead characters are a bit...rough around the edges. Hard to get into them.
